Why we built thisRead our mission statement

Twelve years ago, the kelp forests along our coast were thick enough to lose a boat in. Today, in the waters off Sonoma and Mendocino counties, more than nine in every ten acres are gone. What remains of an ecosystem once comparable to a tropical rainforest in biodiversity is rocky barrens. A record-breaking marine heatwave triggered the collapse in 2014, and the reef hasn't recovered since, but that doesn't mean this is only the scientists', the policymakers', and the economists' fight to win.

We can play a crucial role with our own hands.

Divers who used to make their living pulling abalone and red urchin off this coast now float above barren rock dotted with purple sea urchins. State agencies have paid these divers and commercial fishermen $500 a day to clear the hordes choking that rock, and more often than not those urchins get hauled to shore and turned into compost. If properly fed — whether through restored kelp or with human intervention in urchin labs on-shore — their roe is a marigold-gold delicacy chefs pay a premium for. Real money. Real work. Thrown away, because there's no market built to catch it.

We'd like to pose a different question: what if restoring this coast and making a living from it were the same act, not a trade-off?

Because of that, we built KelpConnect on the ground truth already sitting in the state's own restoration plans and monitoring data, so a harvester or a buyer never has to decode a regulatory framework alone to know whether a product actually helps. Because "sustainable" has come to mean almost nothing. It's a word for not making things worse. We're not interested in not making things worse.

Because of that, every listing here carries a plain answer to one question: does this help the kelp forest come back, or does it just avoid hurting it further? California's Ocean Protection Council has already committed to restoring 2,000 acres of degraded kelp forest by 2030 — and it's already putting real money behind it: $707,000 for kelp restoration in the Channel Islands, and over $1 million for Indigenous-led kelp forest restoration by the Kashia Band of Pomo Indians on the Sonoma coast. KelpConnect exists to connect the people already doing that work with the people who want to buy from them.

We should be plain about what this is. Red urchin roe has been a commercial product on this coast since the 1970s. Purple urchin roe never has — though it was tried. In 1991, divers landed 390,000 pounds of purple urchins on the strength of buyers being courted in Japan. A decade later the figure was under six thousand. The roe wasn't the problem; state fishery reports describe it as very similar in quality to some of the most prized Japanese species. The problem was that purple urchins run smaller, yield less roe, cost more to process, and were being shipped halfway around the world to get sold.

Ranching answers the yield. The barrens answer the supply. Selling close to home answers the distance. Cracking small urchins by hand is still slow, expensive work, and we won't pretend otherwise. Building the market is the part still in front of us — and giving purple urchin roe the standing red urchin roe already has is the work this platform exists to do.
